“LUMINATE” marks the first fully hand-carved and hand-sculpted three-dimensional luminescent sculpture in Aliume’s practice — the beginning of a new sculptural language in which forms previously confined to painting emerge into physical space.
Entirely shaped by hand, the work is constructed as a complex biomorphic organism of interconnected cavities, membranes, ridges, and pointed formations. Its surface evolves from deep internal voids into increasingly luminous outer structures.
LUMINATE expands Aliume’s established visual language into a radically more dimensional form. The visionary structures explored for years through painting are transformed here into a physical manifestation — an object existing simultaneously as sculpture, painting, and light-responsive environment.
Like Aliume’s signature luminescent works, LUMINATE unfolds through three spectral states: visible light, ultraviolet fluorescence, and phosphorescent afterglow in complete darkness. Under ultraviolet illumination, saturated fluorescent color reveals the sculpture’s internal topography and depth. When the light disappears, phosphorescent markings remain suspended across the surface, tracing its contours like bioluminescent currents and revealing an entirely different state of the organism.
As the first work of this kind within Aliume’s practice, LUMINATE represents a transition from image into object — from painted visions of an invisible world into tangible, three-dimensional form.
